Can you show the Mac Dock on both screens?

No. macOS shows the Dock on one display at a time. You can choose which display it appears on, and you can make it follow you, but the built-in settings cannot show it on two screens at once.

How the Dock works with two or more displays

One setting decides where the Dock can appear. Open System Settings, choose Desktop & Dock, and scroll down to the Mission Control section. There you find Displays have separate Spaces.

  • On: the Dock can move to any display, but it still shows on only one display at a time.
  • Off: the Dock stays on your main display.

After you change this setting, log out and back in for it to take effect.

Move the Dock to another screen

With Displays have separate Spaces turned on and the Dock at the bottom of the screen, move the pointer to the bottom edge of the other screen. Any part of the edge works. The Dock leaves the first screen and appears on this one.

Sometimes the Dock does not follow the pointer. Click once on that screen, then move the pointer to the bottom edge again.

Keep the Dock on one screen

If the Dock keeps jumping to the other monitor, turn Displays have separate Spaces off. The Dock then stays on your main display.

This has a cost. Apple notes that the setting must be on to use apps in Split View on your other displays or to use Stage Manager. To choose the main display, open System Settings, choose Displays, select the display, and set Use as to Main display.

A dock on every screen at the same time

macOS cannot do this on its own. Dockaroo gives every display and every desktop its own dock, and each dock shows only the apps that have windows on that screen. Dockaroo Lite is free for your main display and one more.

Summary

  • The built-in Dock shows on one display at a time.
  • With Displays have separate Spaces on, it moves to the screen where you push the pointer to the bottom edge.
  • With the setting off, it stays on the main display.
  • For a dock on every screen at once, you need an app such as Dockaroo.
